Biography
I received my Ph.D. from the USC Price School of Public Policy in 2014. My research interests include nonprofit management and governance, the organization and formation of interest/advocacy organizations, the political economy of the nonprofit sector, charitable giving and experimental research on collective action and fundraising activities.
I currently am an Associate Professor at the University of Oregon's School of Planning, Public Policy and Management, primarily teaching in the Masters of Nonprofit Management and Masters in Public Administration degree programs. I am also the Director of the Master in Nonprofit Management program, one of the first accredited programs in the world by the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council.
During the 2024-2025 academic year, I will be serving as the Vice President and President-elect of the University of Oregon Senate and as chair of the Senate Task Force on Ethical Investments, Purchasing and Contracts.
Prior to attending the University of Southern California, I spent fifteen years working in the nonprofit sector for regional, state and national nonprofit organizations, including the Fund for Public Interest Research (a national environmental and consumer organization), the Human Rights Campaign and Equality Virginia (LGBT equality organizations). While serving Equality Virginia as its Executive Director from 2003-2008, I also served as Deputy Campaign Manager and Field Director for The Commonwealth Coalition, the campaign to defeat Virginia’s so-called “marriage amendment" from 2005-2006, During my time working in the nonprofit sector, I served in an executive capacity, as well as a fundraising officer, field organizer, event planner, public relations and communications consultant and development consultant. I also received my B.A. from USC and an MBA from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA.
